5) The War of the Worlds by  H.G. Wells

This novel is told from the perspectives of an unnamed author and his younger brother in London after the planet is invaded by Martians. The narrator works to return to his wife as the Martians destroy the southern countryside outside the city. His brother, meanwhile, describes the destruction going on in London, which forces him to escape the Martians by boarding a paddle steamer on the Essex coast.

Written between 1895 and 1897, this is one of the earliest examples of a man vs. aliens story. It is completely different from the 2017 movie of the same name (apart from the aliens), but this exhilarating book would arguably make an even better film.
